Research Overview

The research component of Bisophere 2 aims to catalyze interdisciplinary thinking and understanding about the Earth, its living systems, and its future.

The B2 Institute tackles and defines scientific grand challenges. The focus is on breaking down disciplinary divides and facilitating the translation of basic research to real-world applications.

B2 Earthscience conducts research in the earth system and environmental sciences that examines soil-water-atmosphere-plant interactions. Improving understanding of these interactions will be important in gaining insight into the impacts and causes of global environmental change and variation. The Biosphere 2 facility allows for experimentation at unprecedented spatial extents.

The research group has expanded to include:

  • 5 graduate fellows
  • 5 postdoctoral fellows (under a joint program with the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada)
  • 5 staff scientists
  • Many collaborating scientists from the University of Arizona and other institutions
