Stephen G. Wells

President, Desert Research Institute

Dr. Wells, President of the Desert Research Institute (DRI), administers one of the world's largest multidisciplinary environmental research organizations with approximately 500 scientists, technologists, students, and other support staff. Dr. Wells became President of DRI in 1999, overseeing two research campuses and state-of-the-art laboratories in Las Vegas and Reno, as well as satellite research facilities in Boulder City, Nevada and Steamboat Springs, Colorado. DRI consists of three core divisions and four interdisciplinary science centers that serve the State of Nevada and every continent in the world. Dr. Wells is also on the faculty of the Hydrologic Sciences Program and Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Nevada, Reno. He serves as Past President of the Geological Society of America (GSA) and as Board Member on the UNESCO/IUGS International Year of the Planet Earth. Dr. Wells has been a faculty member and administrator at the University of New Mexico and UC-Riverside, as well as serving in joint appointments at U.S. Air Force Office of Research, U.S. Geological Survey, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and The University of Liverpool in England. Dr. Wells is the recipient of three national awards for research excellence from the GSA, the Kirk Bryan Award for best scientific paper in geomorphology and Quaternary geology, the Gladys Cole Award for best scientific proposal in arid land geomorphology, and GSA Farouk El-Baz award for desert research.
